Enable Charging with USB Driver for Blackberry!

Although Blackberry phones use USB to charge, the process is not standard, as user must first install Blackberry software stack on the computer, before charging is started. Since this can not always be done (on public machines, or at work, friends), or can not be done fast, as we all know that downloading driver/desktop manager pack from RIM is usually slow, and at 90+ megabytes not the best thing to do every time.

The (unofficial) solution is to install only USB driver, so that PC recognizes the Blackberry correctly, and can also charge the device accordingly.

Unfortunetly this USB driver is not provided as a standalone packet from RIM. We found the utility that installs only the RIM USB driver (Windows 2000/XP). We have tested it and could not find anything suspecious, but we did test it only on Windows XP installation. Please note that author offers no guarantees.NOTE: Installation of the entire Blackberry Desktop Manager software is the only official, RIM supported way to install the USB drivers. The utility provided here is not RIM supported.

Install RIM USB Driver Only (for charging) on WXP   08-Jan-2007 08:37 193K   (Use the /s switch for a silent install)

Someone please let me know if this works on Vista too… thanks!

With XP if you plug in the device and go to Windows update site, options, hardware you can install from there…

But this little package is much more convenient.

admin @ 1:46 pm

Attach your blackberry to your PC.
Wait that it detects phone (no matter whether it will say that could not install it).
Then open IE and go to http://windowsupdate.com and do an update of windows (choose Custom not Express).
After it checks for upgrade, under optional/hardware you will see driver for RIM Blackberry - add it to update, finish update.
Reboot PC. Blackberry will now be charged normally.

It works on XP and Vista. If yours doesnt work, why not let the Found New Hardware wizard search the web for you. It will install the same thing and will always work perfectly. let me know if that works.

My friend, you rule. I just got a Blackberry Bold 9700 today and spent about six hours setting it up for myself. I am running Windows 7 64 bit and couldn't get the phone to work with Desktop Manager until right before I was going to give up I saw this forum. I am shocked that something actually works with Win 7 64 because it seems like everyone I know, including myself is out of luck with most devices and calls me for a fix. Great find and kudos to you. Hope I can get you back one day.

August 7, 2010

The Joss @ 9:23 am

Works a treat, just save to the desk top then install, simple quick and effective. Don't have the BB plugged connected to the PC during the install.

Just a note but most BB's will charge overnight off a USB connection even though the insufficient power message is displayed. I did this off my laptop when I left the charger at home. Just a tip to file away.

August 11, 2010

acdc @ 3:17 pm

I needed to charge my BB Curve, so I let Windows XP update find it. The USB driver was installed and I was able to charge.

Now, I am trying to run RIM Desktop Manager and it says it cannot find the phone, even though it is connected via USB and is charging! How can I get the Hardware Wizard to "try again" to install the full RIM drivers?

Thanks in advance!
